The Portugao Football Association (PTFA) announced on Thursday that its players will soon be known as “Troy” after a popular Portuguese football club, with the nickname gaining traction on social media.
The announcement came after the PTFA, which is also in charge of the Port of Naples, played in the Europa League, which includes Portugal and the Netherlands, during the summer.
“The name Trenton was created by the fans,” the association said in a statement on its official Twitter account.
“Fans were asked to use the name in a bid to spread the word and to get attention for the club.”
The name was chosen in cooperation with the Port’s Football Academy, a training academy that is based in the capital, according to the PTPA.
The association said it was the first time a Portuguese football team had been named after the capital city.
The name “Tubo” is also used by the Portugese soccer team.
It comes after Portugoa’s national team won the Europa Leagues in 2016 and 2017.
Portugal won the first two games of the 2017 Europa League with a 1-0 win against Porto.
